The famine inside the Ukraine was just never talked about within the Soviet Union. They would just actively suppressed the knowledge and word from spreading. This is very different from how they kept it hidden from the rest of the world. To keep this secret from the rest of the world they threated that if you were caught doing something or saying something that even mentioned the famine, it would be punishible by explulsion from the country or no longer being able to get back into the country.
